Building from the Ground Up: Essential Lumber Choices for a Durable Deck Structure

A high-quality, long-lasting deck starts with the right lumber choices for the structural components. Since you are building a custom structure, selecting the appropriate grade and species for each part is crucial for safety and longevity.

The Foundation and Frame

The lumber used for the posts, beams, and joists is responsible for carrying the entire weight of the deck.

  • Posts and Beams: These must be built with heavy-duty Pressure-Treated (PT) Lumber rated for Ground Contact. This chemical treatment ensures the wood in contact with, or close to, the ground will not rot or suffer insect damage.

  • Joists: These cross-members support the deck surface. While PT lumber is common here, you must ensure the lumber is the correct size and spacing to prevent flexing and bowing of the final surface.

Choosing Your Surface Boards

The deck boards are the lumber that defines the look and feel of your finished project.

  • Cedar: Chosen for its rich color, natural aroma, and ease of cutting. Cedar is an excellent, chemical-free option that requires finishing (staining/sealing) to maintain its color but is naturally resistant to decay.

  • Pressure-Treated: The most cost-effective option for the surface. It’s extremely strong and durable, requiring minimal maintenance.

The key to a durable deck is to select lumber that matches the intended use—structural integrity below and aesthetic appeal above.
