How Much Does Cedar Siding Cost in BC (2026)? Real Prices, Board by Board

If you've searched "cedar siding cost" you've probably landed on a national average — usually somewhere between $8 and $15 US per square foot — that doesn't mean much once you convert it to Canadian dollars, account for BC pricing, or figure out which cedar profile you're actually pricing. So instead of an estimate, here's our real, current price list for the siding profiles we sell in Surrey, broken down to a per-square-foot material cost you can actually use.

These are material prices only — before fasteners, rainscreen strapping, house wrap, or labour. Every price below is pulled straight from our current catalogue.

The three siding profiles, and what they actually cost per square foot

Cedar siding isn't sold "per square foot" — it's sold per board, and how much wall each board actually covers depends on the profile and how much it overlaps its neighbour. Here's the real math for the three profiles we carry:

Western Red Cedar Bevel Siding (1x12)

• 8 ft board: $24.00
• 10 ft board: $30.00
• Effective coverage per board (accounting for the standard 1" bevel overlap): ~0.85 sq ft per linear foot
• Material cost: ~$3.51 per sq ft

Western Red Cedar Channel Siding (1x8, factory primed)

• 12 ft board: $24.00
• Effective coverage per board (accounting for the channel reveal): ~0.54 sq ft per linear foot
• Material cost: ~$3.69 per sq ft

Western Red Cedar Nickel Gap Siding (1x6, clear)

• 12 ft board: $24.00
• Effective coverage per board (1/8" reveal between boards): ~0.45 sq ft per linear foot
• Material cost: ~$4.47 per sq ft

If budget is the priority over species purity, our Japanese Cedar (Sugi) 1x6 tongue-and-groove runs ~$2.93 per sq ft and the 1x4 T&G runs ~$2.88 per sq ft — a legitimate lower-cost entry point that still gives you real solid cedar, not a composite.

Worked example: pricing a real job

A 500 sq ft feature wall or gable end, in channel siding:
500 sq ft ÷ 6.5 sq ft/board coverage ≈ 77 boards × $24.00 = $1,848 in material

A full 1,600 sq ft exterior (typical coverage on a ~2,200 sq ft BC home once you subtract windows, doors and roofline), in bevel siding:
1,600 sq ft × $3.51/sq ft ≈ $5,616 in material

Swap in nickel gap for a more modern look and the same job runs closer to $7,150. Swap in Sugi T&G to keep costs down and it drops to roughly $4,600–$4,700.

These numbers are for material only. Budget separately for rainscreen strapping (required under BC Building Code for most exterior wall assemblies), house wrap, stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners (cedar reacts badly to standard steel), and installation labour, which typically runs comparable to or more than the material cost depending on your contractor and the complexity of the elevation.

Why cedar siding costs what it costs

Cedar's price reflects three things vinyl and fibre-cement don't have to account for: it's a natural, graded material (so yield and consistency vary by log), it's genuinely rot- and insect-resistant without chemical treatment, and — for Western Red Cedar specifically — it's a regional BC product, not something shipped in from overseas or manufactured. You're paying for the tree, not a factory process.

Which profile should you choose?

• Bevel siding is the traditional look — horizontal lapped boards, casts a shadow line, works on almost any style of home. It's also your cheapest per-square-foot option among the solid-cedar profiles here.
• Channel siding gives a cleaner, more modern reveal with less visible lap, and ours comes factory primed, which saves a step before finishing.
• Nickel gap is the current premium/modern-farmhouse look — tight, flat, minimal shadow line — and it costs more per square foot because you get less coverage per board.
